This is one of the most demanding and most important parts of Standards Based Learning. This is the piece that makes everything work. The Formative assessments allows the student to practice the skills and show you, the teacher, where they are in reference to the targets. These Formatives can then help you drive your future instruction to help all students meet the target by the end of the unit. In Project Adventure the Formative assessments have allowed me to see areas that students have struggled in. This then allowed me to change my instruction to help students improve in those areas. Some of the things I have been able to do is focus more instruction on a specific area and make specific groupings of students based on the skill area I am trying to work on with that class. I have seen these instructional changes really affect the students performance in a positive manner. The students performance did improve on the future Formartives that we did in class. The Formatives reflect what you are going to ask them to do on their Summatives so these activities should allow you to have a good idea how each student will do on the Summative. Timely feedback is essential for students to improve their performance. If the Formatives are not corrected and returned to students in a timely manner then they will not be able to take the feedback to improve their work. They will not know their mistakes and why they are making them. I believe the timely feedback is one of the most important pieces for learning to take place. Summative assessments should really be the finally step for each student to show their learning. Nothing on the Summative should be a surprise. They should have already been able to show their competence in all of the target areas that they are being assessed on and this is just the final crowning opportunity to show their skills off. All pieces tied to gether allow teachers to have a very good grasp on the ability of all of our students.
